Why are the colors of the Frize Sweatshirt bright and contrasting?
When I look for new fabrics, I do it first based on purely artistic criteria. I postpone examining commercial constraints (cost, availability, etc.) until later. Because I want to only ever offer clothes cut from magnificent fabrics.
But, at the same time, I must take into account another constraint, one could say a constraint of relevance, which means that our clothes must also be suitable in style, cut, color, for the men of today. today. And I especially know that men can't help but dress mainly in blue and gray.
That's why I'm constantly looking for beautiful fabrics in these colors.
It's not the easiest, especially for gray which is often a neutral and dull color. But, when I saw the fleece of the Frize Sweatshirt, I immediately understood that I could make a beautiful piece from it, because, although gray, it was exceptionally bright and contrasting . I will try to explain to you why this is so.
Seen up close, the Sweat Frize is a checkerboard of small ecru spots placed on a gray background. One might believe that, given the proximity of the two colors (gray and ecru), they would blend into each other to give a third, slightly paler shade. This is also the case, seen from afar. But it's not the case, seen up close. This is because, according to an optical law, the juxtaposition of the two shades makes the eye see them as dissimilar as possible: gray appears grayer, ecru, more ecru, each color has become at the same time more contrasted and brighter.
This exaltation of colors , born from their juxtaposition, is not real, it is only an impression, but this impression strikes our sensitivity with the embellishment and magnificence of the colors . Post-Impressionist painters, like Seurat and Signac, became aware of this particularity of colors becoming denser and more beautiful when they are juxtaposed in small spots without mixing them ; and they invented divisionism and pictorial pointillism to better represent their vision of the world.
